Educational Play Therapy

Education and Training

FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Requests for Professional Development

The Department of Educational Play Therapy Professional Development program is consistently growing to meet the professional development and training needs of health professionals, students and community groups.

Our aim is to increase awareness of the issues children face when hospitalised and how educational play therapy can help ease these for children and their families. We also aim to enhance the skills of those already working in the area.

Individual, specific lectures on negotiated topics and workshops are available. Lectures can be tailored to meet the needs of community groups, education, nursing and medical students. They are also offered to practising clinicians in the above fields.

Please Note: The Educational Play Therapy department is currently reviewing our Professional Development services, we are unable to provide lectures at this time.

FOR STUDENTS

What qualifications do I need to become an Educational Play Therapist?

Educational Play Therapists have a Bachelor in Early Childhood Education or Education, or a post graduate qualification in Education and must be eligible to be certified by the Australasian Association of Hospital Play Specialists (AAHPS). They will be bound by the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct of AAHPS.

Does the Educational Play Therapy department take high school students for work experience?

No. The intensive nature of the work makes it inappropriate for students to complete work experience with us.

Does the Educational Play Therapy department take university students?

Yes. The Royal Children's Hospital is linked to the University of Melbourne. Therefore, priority is given to the students in their final year at the University of Melbourne.  Students wishing to undertake an internship style placement are welcome to apply for placement.    Students from other Universities are also accepted, as are international students. International students should note that appropriate visas are required. These can take some time to be approved and this should be taken into consideration when applying for placements.

Please Note: The Educational Play Therapy department is not currently taking any student placements for 2012.   Please check back here later in the year for information about the 2013 program.
