How to call and respond to an emergency

The RACE all hazards approach: REMOVE; ALERT; CONTAIN and EVACUATE

REMOVE

Look after your own safety first

If safe, move any one in immediate danger, move to area of safety (e.g., past the first set of fire doors)

In a flood situation - do not turn power off

Under no circumstances are heavy objects to be moved

If ARMED CONFRONTATION - Under no circumstances should you place yourself in further jeopardy.  Discreetly remove yourself / others from the area.

ALERT

  • Alert people in the immediate and the organisation
  • Telephone the RCH Emergency Switchboard number 777 and provide details
  • IF FIRE - Activate the Manual Call Point ("Break Glass Alarm")
  • Inform the area's Zone Warden / Manager of what you have observed and what actions you have taken

CONTAIN

  • If safe, and when using emergency equipment, if trained:
  • Close doors in the vicinity (except for bomb threat)
  • IF FIRE - attempt to extinguish small fire (using right type of fire extinguisher).  Use only one extinguisher
  • IF HAZARDOUS or DANGEROUS MATERIAL attempt to contain spill or leak by ensuring:
  • Correct personal protective equipment is worn
  • You have knowledge about the hazard (consult appropriate MSDS or other appropriate reference material)
  • IF SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE or OBJECT
  • Do not touch or move
  • Attempt to isolate area
  • Notify Zone Warden immediately

EVACUATE

  • If in immediate danger move to an area of safety, usually past the next fire doors or into an emergency stairwell
  • Otherwise await instructions from Zone Warden
  • Note: If evacuating separately to the instructions of the affected area's Zone Warden, than report to the Zone Warden in the area of safety.
