About Us

  • The Emergency Department at The Royal Children's Hospital provides urgent medical care to children and adolescents.  The Department operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Approximately 75,000 patients, ranging from newborns to teenagers, are seen each year.

The Department is staffed by medical, nursing, clerical, allied health (eg social work, mental health workers etc) and administrative staff as well as ward services assistants.  The clinical area has four Resuscitation rooms, 26 cubicles, four Procedure rooms and is closely associated with the Radiology Department and Dolphin - Medical Short Stay

The Emergency department entrance is via Entry 2 from Flemington Road, Parkville.  Parents are able to drive down to the Emergency department and drop off their child however, to ensure ambulance access, parking outside the Emergency bay is strictly prohibited. Visitor parking is available in the basement levels of the new hospital.

When a patient presents to Emergency they are first seen by our clerical staff and then by a Triage nurse who conducts an initial assessment of the child.  This may involve taking the child's temperature, weighing them and talking to the parent or child about the presenting problem.

A clerical staff member will then take demographic details from the parent.  The child and parent  may be asked to wait until their name is called by a doctor or a nurse practitioner for assessment.  This wait can be anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on how sick your child is and the numbers of patients presenting at a similar time.

When a patient is called by a doctor or nurse, they will proceed to a bay or consulting room to be seen by one of the Emergency Department staff.

Direct relatives are permitted to visit patients at any time, however visits by others are limited, and they may visit between 8am-9pm only.
