Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray is the generic term for the extract of naturally occurring peppers of the capsicum family. The active ingredient is thought to be capsaicin. It may be used by police when dealing with violent situations.

Clinical effects

• Intense irritation of conjunctiva and nasal and oral mucosa
• Bronchospasm and cough
• Irritation of skin with erythema and intense burning pain

Treatment

• Assess Airway breathing and circulation. See resuscitation guidelines
• Look for any signs of injury. See major injury guidelines
• Treat bronchospasm with salbutamol. See asthma guidelines
• Irrigate eyes with copious amounts of water
• Wash skin with copious amounts of water
