Who may be at risk?

Eating disorders can affect almost anyone however there are certain groups like adolescent and young adult women who at a higher risk of developing an eating disorder.  Eating disorders can occur across all ages and socio-economic groups.

More research is being conducted on better understanding risk factors in eating disorders, however they may include the following:

  • Adolescent and young women.
  • People who have perfectionist, rigid or risk-avoiding personality traits.
  • Individuals who diet.
  • Personal or family history of obesity, eating disorders substance abuse or depression.
  • History of physical or sexual abuse.
  • History of teasing or bullying.
  • Elite sportspeople in sports where weight or shape is a factor.
  • Professions which have an emphasis on weight or shape (ie dancers, models).
