Psychological repercussions of eating disorders

Eating disorders place a great deal stress on individuals and may have the following emotional and psychological consequences:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Shame and guilt
  • Mood swings
  • Low self esteem
  • Impaired social and family relationships
  • Perfectionism
  • "all or nothing" thinking
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviours
  • Obsessive behaviour
  • Impaired understanding of reality
  • Lack of assertiveness
