The Learning and Behaviour Clinic at the Centre for Community Child Health was established to support children with difficulty learning at kindergarten or school and with associated developmental and behaviour problems.
Patients are bulk billed for their consultations and therefore will need a referral from their general practitioner.
About 15% of children in primary school have difficulty with learning, particularly with reading. Many have associated behavioural difficulties with attention and self control, and some have significant social and anxiety problems. Language delay may also be a problem. Other developmental problems with motor skills and toileting may effect school or preschool performance.
Each child has a full paediatric assessment, including health, development, behaviour and learning. Liaison with the school and other health and educational professionals will be arranged as required.
The clinic may refer to other Royal Children's Hospital departments or community services when necessary to better understand the child's problems.
Clinic staff include consultant paediatricians, senior paediatric trainees, senior psychology trainees and clinic coordinators. There may be teaching and research activities in the clinic.
