School Function Program

Features of the program

  • The school function program provides a co-ordinated multidisciplinary approach for the assessment of children of primary school age (6 – 12 years) with learning difficulties.
  • Referrals to the school function program come from parents, teachers, doctors and school support personnel.
  • The program also trains paediatricians, teachers and other professionals in assessment and practical management of children with learning difficulties.
  • Assessment takes place over a half day, and a detailed report with management strategies is sent to the family and the school.
  • The family and the school play an integral role in the program.

Clinic staff include consultant paediatricians, clinical psychologist, special educator, occupational therapist, senior paediatric trainees and clinic coordinators. There may be teaching and research activities in the clinic.

A GP or specialist referral is required.

Assessment

 Step 1

Prior to the day of assessment, the family completes a questionnaire about the child’s past and present health, learning and behaviour.
A questionnaire is also completed by the child’s teacher (with the parent’s permission)

 Step 2
The assessment at the hospital covers the child’s level of functioning in the following areas:
1. Academic abilities
2. Developmental profile
3. Cognitive functioning
4. Emotional wellbeing
5. Physical health
Step 3 A “case conference” takes place with the paediatrician, special educator, psychologist, occupational therapist & the child’s teacher to discuss the results of the assessment and make recommendations according to the needs of the child.
Step 4 The paediatric doctor discusses the findings and recommendations of the team with the parents.
Step 5 Parents and the school receive a detailed report of the assessment and recommended management strategies.

Cost

The cost of the program is $270. This covers the contribution of the specialist educator and the psychologist. The patient is also bulk billed for the medical consultation.
