Mobile Phones

Cellular mobile phones are capable of radiating large quantities of electromagnetic energy when transmitting or receiving calls, text messages and when communicating with the base station. This electromagnetic energy may cause interference with medical equipment even if the mobile phone is in standby mode.

Cellular mobile phones shall not be used in patient care areas such as Intensive Care, Neonatal Units, Operating Suites, Emergency, Wards, Medical Imaging, and Day Centres. Warning signs are displayed at the entrance of patient care areas advising those who enter to turn off mobile phones.

Phones

Handheld radio transceivers, often referred to as walkie-talkies, also emit large quantities of electromagnetic energy that may similarly cause interference with medical equipment. These should also not be used in patient care areas.

Low power, cordless telephones, are less likely to interfere with medical equipment and are not prohibited. However, their use close to medical equipment is not recommended.

Mobile phones and radio transceivers may be used outside patient care areas such as in the main entrance foyer, lift lobbies, waiting rooms and corridors.

For further information or advice on the use of cellular mobile phones, radio transceivers and other radio communication devices please contact the Chief Biomedical Engineer.
