The Children’s Bioethics Centre is committed to improving children’s lives through promoting the rights and responsibilities of children and their families in health care.

  • Lead the development of a paediatric ethics agenda in health care both nationally and internationally

The Children's Bioethics Centre has four major areas of activity: a clinical ethics service, an education program, a research program and guideline and clinical procedure development. 

The Children's Bioethics Centre at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) Melbourne is an initiative of the RCH in partnership with the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and the University of Melbourne. It is funded by The Royal Childrens Hospital Foundation.

Bioethics Development Board

Established by the RCH Foundation, the Development Board actively supports the work of the Children's Bioethics Centre. The Patron of the Development Board is the Hon. Alistair Nicholson, Chairman of Children's Rights International and former Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia.

Bioethics Pratt Scholarship 2011

The Children's Bioethics Centre's is pleased to announce the recipients of its inaugural Bioethics Pratt Scholarship for 2011. The scholarship will enable the following hospital staff to further develop their working knoweldge of bioethics:

  • Annabelle Mann-      Royal Children's Hospital Legal Counsel 
  • Lynn Ireland-            Senior Nurse of Organ and Tissue Donation, PICU Transplantation
  • Dr. Zornitza Starck-   Fellow in Clinical Genetics- Genetic Health services Victoria

The Bioethics Pratt Scholarship was established in 2010 to enable staff members at the Royal Children's Hospital, Mudoch Childrens Research Institute or the University of Melbourne to undertake a higher degree in Bioethics which could include a Masters of Bioethics, Masters of Health Social Sciences, PhD or Masters by Research. At the same time, the recipient will gain comprehensive peadiatric clinical ethics consultation experience with the RCH clinical ethics service, and research experience through the Children’s Bioethics Centre at The Royal Children’s Hospital.

Applications were considered from professionals with degrees in medicine, philosophy, nursing, social work, religious studies, law, or other fields related to the practice of clinical and academic bioethics.
