Parent Information letter

Please ensure that the AEDI Parent Information letter is provided to all parents and guardians of children in their first year of full-time schooling.

Where parents or guardians have low literacy in any language, the contents of the letter may be conveyed verbally. Where this is necessary, ensure that:

1.    the entire contents of the letter is communicated
2.    the parent/guardian is provided with the contact number for the AEDI National Support Centre in case they have any questions
3.    the parent/guardian understands the information communicated (ask questions to clarify that this is the case)
4.    a record of this process is kept. Do this by completing a copy of the Verbal Communication of the Parent Information Letter Proforma  . Schools are required to keep records of all instances where the Parent Information letter is communicated verbally.

These steps will help to ensure that all parents are providing informed consent. If you are uncertain whether this process has been successful, please seek assistance from the AEDI National Support Centre. Do not complete checklists for children unless the school is confident that parents/guardians have understood the contents of the letter. It is the responsibility of school personnel to ensure that parents have been informed about the AEDI and have had an opportunity to opt-out.
