Community Education & Training

The Department of Allergy and Immunology provides a range of quality training programs on The Prevention and Management of Anaphylaxis.  These sessions are delivered by highly qualified and experienced staff.

Accredited Training 21659VIC First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis

The Department of Allergy and Immunology is now able to deliver accredited training in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis, under a partnership agreement with Australian Red Cross (RTO no. 3605).

This course meets the accredited training requirements of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) for staff working in schools and children services.

Quality Training

• All of our trainers hold Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
• Our training staff receive ongoing professional development and working within the allergy department.
• Training is targeted to meet not only the requirements of the competency but also can be tailored to individual work places.
• Training programs are competency based.
• The Department of Allergy has been delivering both training and community sessions to the early childhood and education sectors for many years.

Content Overview

• Assess the situation in relation physical hazards according with first aid principles and procedures
• Provide appropriate first aid treatment for anaphylactic reaction
  • Reassure the casualty
  • follow the casualty's individual First Aid anaphylaxis Action plan is followed
  • Administration of adrenaline and appropriate first aid
  • Casualty's condition is monitored
• Communicate details of the incident
  • Appropriate emergency assistance is requested
  • Documentation is completed relating to the situations and established procedures
• Identify individuals at risk of allergic reactions
• Develop individual anaphylaxis management plans
• Implement strategies to prevent allergic and anaphylaxis reactions
• Develop and implement a communication plan

• Staff providing catering for children

Assessment

To be deemed as competent for this course, participants need to participate in assessment tasks during the session on, EpiPen® administration, completing series of questions and a risk assessment activity.

Course Duration

Approximately 3.0 hours

Group size

Maximum group number for our training session is 20 participants.

Issuing of Certificates  

A statement of attainment will be issued on successful completion of the course and assessment tasks.  This course is valid for 3 years.  Statement of Attainment will be issued under (RTO no. 3605).  This program is a Nationally Recognised Training Course with the Australian Qualification Framework.

Training is being held in the Board Room which is situated on the fifth floor,  the front building of the hospital. On entering through the main entrance turn right and take the silver lifts up to the fifth floor.  The Board Room is directly opposite the lift.

Family Education Sessions on Allergy and Anaphylaxis

The Department is committed to supporting families of children that have been diagnosed with allergies and or anaphylaxis.  We are committed to providing current information and knowledge to assist families better understand their child's condition.  We are offering education sessions that will inform and empower families.

Who can attend these sessions?

These sessions are open to:

• Parents and family members
• Teenagers with anaphylaxis
• Nannies and babysitters
• The general community 

How long are these sessions?

Sessions run for approximately 90 minutes.

Please allow time for parking as sessions will commence on time.

When are the sessions?

Sessions are held on a regular basis in the evening
