MANAGEMENT & PREVENTION OF ALLERGY & ANAPHYLAXIS
The Department of Allergy and Immunology is able to deliver training in Management and prevention in allergy and anaphylaxis as outlined in the Ministerial Order 90 5.3 (ii) a course in anaphylaxis management endorsed and delivered by a tertiary level specialist allergy service within a tertairy level academic hospital"
This course meets the requirements of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) for staff working in schools

- Our training staff receive ongoing professional development and working within the allergy department.
- Training is targeted to meet not only the requirements of the competency but also can be tailored to individual work places.

Content Overview
- Assess the situation in relation physical hazards according with first aid principles and procedures
- Provide appropriate first aid treatment for anaphylactic reaction
- Reassure the casualty
- follow the casualty's individual First Aid anaphylaxis Action plan is followed
- Administration of adrenaline and appropriate first aid
- Casualty's condition is monitored
- Communicate details of the incident
- Appropriate emergency assistance is requested
- Documentation is completed relating to the situations and established procedures
- Identify individuals at risk of allergic reactions
- Develop individual anaphylaxis management plans
- Implement strategies to prevent allergic and anaphylaxis reactions
- Develop and implement a communication plan

Assessment
To be deemed as competent for this course, participants need to participate in assessment tasks during the session on, EpiPen/Anapenᆴ administration, completing series of questions and a risk assessment activity.
Course Duration
Approximately 3.0 hours
Group size
Maximum group number for our training session is 18 participants.
Issuing of Certificates
A Certificate of Attainment will be issued on successful completion of the course and assessment tasks. This course is valid for 3 years. This program is not an accredited course but fulfills the requirements of the Ministerial Order 90 Anaphylaxis in Schools

22099VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis
The Department of Allergy and Immunology is now able to deliver nationally recognised training in 22099VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis, under a partnership agreement with Australian Education & Training (RTO no. 21509).
This accredited course meets the training requirements of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) for staff working in schools and early childhood services.
Quality Training
- All of our trainers hold Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or equivalent and are either registered nurses with extensive experience in allergy or trainers which also deliver the Anaphylaxis Management Professional Development Course (Train the Trainer).
- Our training staff receive ongoing professional development on allergy information and current research on a regular basis.
- The Department has many years of experience delivering training in both the early childhood and education sectors.
- Training is targeted to meet not only the requirements of the competency but also can be tailored to individual work places.

Content Overview
- Respond to the situation
- Physical hazards are identified and removed according to established first aid principles and procedures, without delaying administration of adrenaline
- The signs of an acute allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) are recognized and responded to urgently
- Appropriate urgent response in line with the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis is determined to ensure prompt control of situation
- Provide appropriate first aid treatment for anaphylactic reaction
- Reassure the casualty
- Follow the casualty's individual ASCIA Action plan for Anaphylaxis
- Administration of adrenaline autoinjector and appropriate first aid
- Casualty's condition is monitored
- Communicate details of the incident
- Appropriate emergency assistance is requested
- Documentation is completed relating to the situations and established procedures
- Evaluate first aid response to Anaphylactic reaction
- Identify individuals at risk of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
- Develop individual anaphylaxis management plans
- Implement strategies to prevent allergic reactions and anaphylactic reactions
- Strategies are implemented to reduce the risk of severe reactions in individuals
- Develop and implement a communication plan
Assessment
To be deemed as competent for this course, participants need to participate in assessment tasks during the session. These assessments include EpiPen® administration, Anapen® administration, completing a series of questions, a risk assessment and a communication plan.

The Department is committed to supporting families of children that have been diagnosed with allergies and or anaphylaxis. We are committed to providing current information and knowledge to assist families better understand their child's condition. We are offering education sessions that will inform and empower families.

ANAPHYLAXIS MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (Train the Trainer)

This course has been especially designed to provide additional information on allergic disease and anaphylaxis. The Royal Children’s Hospital is committed to support educators and training in their delivery of allergy and anaphylaxis. We have developed a comprehensive three day course to extend individual’s knowledge of allergy and anaphylaxis and see how children are diagnosed with allergy here at the hospital. Two of these days are classroom focused and 1 is clinical placement. This is the first course that offers clinical observation time in the Department of Allergy & Immunology alongside our excellent clinicians.

- To provide current evidence based education and information on allergy and anaphylaxis.
- To ensure continuity of information being taught by individuals and RTO’s delivering anaphylaxis training and education.
- To increase the knowledge of all trainers delivering allergy and anaphylaxis training

Assessment
1. Case Study
A report on a child with an allergic reaction that attends the Department of Allergy and Immunology at RCH. The student needs to accompany a child through the process of having the consultation with the Specialist, undergoing skin prick tests and food challenges and then concluding with the Specialist’s summation of the allergy and his/her ongoing management. The required assessment will consist of:

- Identification of risks associated with an allergic reaction at childcare or school
- Individual allergy action plan for this child including planned schedule for regular review of the plan
- A risk assessment and minimisation plan
- A communication plan for stakeholders.

There is a maximum of 18 places per session.
Course delivery is subject to a certain number of participants and low numbers may indicate a postponement of the session.
