Primary health

Young people are comprehensively assessed by an Adolescent Forensic Health Service nurse and a doctor upon admission to a custodial centre.  Assessment incorporates general medical, mental status, substance use, psychosocial and offending history, and screening is offered for sexually transmitted infections, blood borne viruses and other medical conditions as required.

Ongoing management of primary health needs is handled via daily triage and health clinics to address:

  • Management of acute and chronic medical issues and physical injuries
  • Sexual health
  • Growth and Nutrition
  • Alcohol and Drug treatment, including detoxification and opiate replacement therapy
  • Dental care
  • Optometry
  • Physiotherapy
  • Vaccination program
