2007

Visit of Professor Xavier Castellanos (July/August 2007)

Xavier Castellanos is a paediatrician and child/adolescent psychiatrist who founded and directs the Phyllis Green and Randolph Cōwen Institute for Paediatric Neuroscience at the NYU School of Medicine Child Study Centre, where he is the Brooke and Daniel Neidich Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Professor of Radiology, Director of Research on Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Research Psychiatrist at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research. His work aims at elucidating the neuroscience of ADHD through structural and functional brain imaging studies, collaborating on molecular genetic studies, and coordinating an interdisciplinary network of translational investigators (the ADHD Neuroscience Network). Dr. Castellanos chaired the NIH ‘Initial Review Group’ (Study Section) on Developmental Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities from 2005-2007 and is chairing the revision of the diagnostic criteria for externalizing disorders for the forthcoming edition of DSM-V, projected for 2012.

SYMPOSIA

Clinical and research seminars were held when Professor Xavier Castellanos visited the University of Melbourne as a Miegunyah Distinguished Fellow.  Both seminars were practically helpful and Professor Castellanos and the other presenters allowed ample time to answer clinically relevant questions.

Professor Paramala Santosh (Developmental Neuropsychiatrist, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Chidren, United Kingdom) visited Melbourne in February 2008.

A clinical symposium on "How important are the developing brain, home and school for understanding ADHD and key comorbid disorders"  was held on the 22 September 2008.  Professor David Coghill, University of Dundee, Scotland was a guest speaker.

Supervision of Registrars

The Academic Child Psychiatry Unit (ACPU) provides clinical supervision and training through the Royal Children's Hospital Mental Health Service (RCHMHS).  Please note that registrars are encouraged to refer patients for current clinical research projects, attend the clinical research assessment process and receive clinical training and feedback from the assessment process in oral and written forms.


Second Opinion

The Academic Child Psychiatry Unit (ACPU) provides clinical second opinions with feedback in oral and written forms through its existing clinics.  Please feel free to refer patients according to the guidelines set out in the Services section of the ACPU website.
